Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi
This development is situated on a sensitive riverside location next to the 14-century Corpus Christi Hall, a Grade II* listed building in the historic centre of Maidstone, Kent.
The site is currently being used as a car park. Our proposed development would bring life to an underdeveloped area of the city by creating a mixed private/public development that provides a pedestrian route through the grounds of one of Maidstone’s oldest buildings.
The theme for the proposal developed around a series of courtyards having different levels of privacy. It was developed in consultation with English Heritage and the local council conservation department.

The elevational treatment of the building is predominately brick to respond to the surrounding late Victorian Warehouse Buildings. The volume of the proposal is reduced visually with the introduction of glazed winter gardens to the upper floors of the scheme and a brick arcade to the west elevation to relate to the smaller scale of Corpus Christi to evoke the image of a belvedere.
The development comprises 32 one- and two-bedroom units, which form one edge of the space. The front of the main elevation overlooks the new public square, which features a café and outdoor seating.
